DRILL
Quick Full Oval Transition with 2-on-1
  • Purpose
Moving the ball quickly through open space, then switching infield is an excellent pathway to goal. This drill practices long kicking to targets leading to open space, centering the ball, and beating a defender to achieve a shot on goal. A race format makes this drill more challenging and enjoyable.

  • This is a race, with 2 teams of 6 players moving the ball up/down their side of the ground in the opposite direction to the other team. Players spread evenly amongst stations (A) to (F). Choose two players as defenders who start at CHB.
  • When both full-backs at (A) have a football, the coach signals the start with a blow of the whistle. Full-backs at (A) kick-in to their respective (B)'s who lead to opposite flanks.
(A)'s may kick to themself in order to play-on and gain some extra distance.
  • (B)'s mark and play-on immediately, then kick to (C) who has lead from CHF.
  • (C) marks and quickly backpedals before centering with a low trajectory kick to (D), who has run from the defensive side of centre.
  • (D) and (E) must work their way past defender (F) with handball, then either player takes a shot on goal.
Optionally, (F) can tackle or simply apply token pressure.
  • The first team to score a goal wins the race. After a shot is taken, the attacking pair split-up, the goalkicker continuing to station (A) alone, and non-goalkicking partner returning to station (E) to form another attacking pair. Other players move to the next station except for the defenders who should be rotated after a few minutes. Once everyone has moved to the next station and fullbacks at (A) are ready, the coach restarts the next race.
  • To focus on fitness, you may choose to scrap the race format and restart the kick-in as soon as a shot has been taken. You may also choose to change the direction from anti-clockwise to clockwise by shifting the cones to the opposite side of the ground.
