Name, Fake, Look-away
  • Purpose
    Sometimes a player in possession can orchestrate the play instead of waiting for someone to call. This involves calling the intended recipient of the pass, then progresses to using deceptive passing techniques.

  • Setup a pentagon with distance between cones about 5m max.
  • (A) starts with the ball and elects who they will pass to by calling their name before passing to them, e.g. (E) in the diagram
  • Similarly, (E) calls a random player's name before passing to them
  • For the first minute or thereabouts, players should look at the player they are passing to
  • Progression 1: Perform a fake pass by aborting the throw to the first-called player mid-throw, then calling a 2nd player to pass to.
    Quick hands and decisive voice is required
  • Progression 2: Perform a look-away pass by looking elsewhere rather than towards the intended recipient
    Requires concentration by passive players to listen for their name, as the passer won't be looking at them
