Inside Goal Circle Penalty
  • Purpose
    Receiving a penalty pass enables you to run set plays to take advantage of the spare player. This particular strategy is used when you've received a penalty inside the circle.

  • Choose teams and setup as per the diagram.
  • The preferred option for a penalty pass or shot in the circle is always for the shooter to step-in and shoot. However if they're not within comfortable range:-
    The goalie without the ball stands on the far-side of the post for an offload
    If the defender over-commits to shot defence and has given the other goalie too much space, motion to shoot but perform a look-away pass to their counterpart
    The other possibility when a defender is sagging to cover the non-shooting goalie is to perform a double play with the nearest feeder.
  • When a circle defender penalised is nearer the post than the goal arc, taking a shot is almost always the best option. The non-shooting goalie can either:-
    Receive an off-load for 3m mid-range shots, as per step 1
    Screen if there's a shot from 2m
    Position for the rebound if extremely close
  • Feeders [WA/C] stand on the circle edge ready for goalie double plays.
